Goodbye From Spreecast


To our Spreecast users,

I recently made the difficult decision to shut down the Spreecast product.

We originally launched Spreecast in late 2011 as a destination for people all over the world to connect and converse about shared interests, current events and educational topics. Many different people and companies gave Spreecast a try and some became habitual users. Over time, we had a diverse group of users including life coaches, podcasters, media companies, think tanks, social groups, religious groups and celebrities. In the end, however, we were not able to make Spreecast a viable business.

I want to thank all of you for your patronage and support. It was a great honor to serve you all. For those of you who are still using Spreecast, I am sorry to let you down.

We will be shutting the site down on July 14, 2016. Prior to this date, you will see some other changes. For example, in the coming days we will be removing the ability to create new Spreecast events and we will be canceling all events that are scheduled to occur after July 14. If you already have events scheduled between now and July 13, you’ll still be able to use Spreecast.

You will be able to download all of your archived Spreecast events free of charge by clicking on the download links we have provided as follows. To access your download links, go to your account settings (account settings can be found in the drop-down menu when clicking on your profile image in the upper right hand corner of the homepage) and then go to “my spreecasts.” When you hover over each event, you’ll see a button highlighted blue that says “download video.” If you’re already on our Influencer plan, this will look familiar. You can also download by clicking into the event page. There will be a blue banner at the top of the page with a link.

If you are a subscriber and do not have any events scheduled, please log into Spreecast and cancel your subscription. If you do have a Spreecast event scheduled between now and July 13, feel free to stay on your current subscription until your event at which point we would encourage you to cancel your subscription. Regardless of any cancellations, we will be cancelling all subscriptions on July 14 and refunding pro-rata payments so that all subscribers were not charged for service beyond today.

Introducing Spreecast Donations: Give Back to your Favorite Spreecasters!

Over the last couple years, Spreecast’s content creators have found innovative ways to use our interactive feature set to build genuine communities of viewers. Whether it be imparting valuable business wisdom, providing moral support or recapping last night’s game, there’s no doubt that Spreecasters have fostered unforgettable and valuable experiences for their audiences.

Today, we’re excited to announce Spreecast Donations, a new feature that will allow viewers to show their appreciation and give back, in real-time, to their favorite Spreecast content creators. On the Spreecast event page, before, during or after an event, viewers will now see a “Donate” button below the title. By clicking on that, viewers can send a dollar amount of their choice along with a personalized thank you message to content creators.

Donations made during live Spreecasts will be displayed prominently on the page, along with the accompanying note, as they occur. If a viewer makes a donation before or after the event, the content creator will receive an email with the message to make sure they feel the love!

Introducing Spreecast Highlights!

Anyone who has been part of a live spreecast knows how vibrant the experience can be with our platform’s rich, genuine interactivity. As a team, we’ve been thinking hard about ways that we can bring some of that engagement to archived spreecasts and make it a more digestible user experience. Our new highlights feature does just that allowing viewers to seamlessly jump between key moments in a spreecast. So, for example, if you were on camera with Tony Robbins, you’d be able to skip right to the moment where you were brought on camera and even share that with your friends!

For archived spreecasts, you’ll now notice a new area below the video player that lists the event’s highlights. These moments are automatically curated based on certain actions that occur during a spreecast including people coming on camera, questions being asked or external media being put on screen. Event creators and producers will still have the ability to create clips, which will appear as highlights. For those of you who have already created clips, don’t worry we’re automatically porting those over into the highlight format!

Product Update: Improvements to Spreecast Video Quality

The Spreecast engineering team has been hard at work over the last six months building a number of improvements aimed at optimizing the experience for both content creators and viewers. One of the largest ongoing projects has been a full revamp of our audio and video infrastructure, which we recently completed. We’ll try not to dive too deep into the technical details but the upgrades include:

  • Resolution: We’ve upgraded from 320×240 to 640×480, improving the video resolution for both viewers and broadcasters.
  • Variable Bit Rate Encoding: For broadcasters, we now dynamically adjust bit rate, or the amount of data being sent, based on your network connectivity providing the best possible reliability and audio/video quality that your setup can handle.
  • Low Bandwidth Mode: For broadcasters with very weak connections, we allow the quality to auto-switch to a lower resolution.
  • Improved video and image appearance: Viewers should notice smoother image quality due to improvements in our display algorithms.
  • Improved Archive Quality: Archived spreecasts are now optimized to display even better quality than the live experience.
  • “Single stream” Viewer Experience: This decouples viewer bandwidth from broadcaster bandwidth allowing us to maximize broadcaster quality without overwhelming the network for live viewers.
